National Cancer Center (NCC) Japan, together with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), co-organized its fifth seminar on “Cancer Screening in the World and Japan” on December 7th 2018, based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutions. Dr Partha Basu, Head of Screening Group, IARC visited NCC Japan and gave a lecture about the recent launch of the key IARC project, Cancer Screening in Five Continents, “CanScreen5”.
The seminar was opened up by a welcoming speech by Shoichiro Tsugane (Director, Center for Public Health Sciences, NCC Japan) followed by a brief lecture by Tomohiro Matsuda (Head, National Cancer Registry Section, Center for Cancer Control and Information Services, NCC Japan) on “Cancer Registry for Cancer Screening”. Dr Partha Basu then presented on CanScreen5, explaining its objectives and expected outcomes, ending with an open invitation to Japan on the participation to CanScreen5.
CanScreen5 is a web-based portal which aims to collect information on the characteristics and performance of the cancer programs across the globe in a harmonized manner and disseminate the same for improved program management, informed policy making, strengthening health information systems relevant to cancer screening and supporting research.
Following the presentation on CanReg5, Tomio Nakayama (Chief, Division of Screening Assessment and Management, Center for Public Health Sciences, NCC Japan) gave a lecture on “Cancer Screening in Japan” and Dr Partha Basu ended the Q&A session highlighting the importance of high standard of performance on cancer screening program because poor quality screening is ineffective and in some cases may do more harm than good.
