Introduction
The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care provides anesthesia and intensive care. Over 6,000 anesthetic services are provided at 15 main operation rooms, one MRI operation room, and one radioisotope operation room. During the period from January 2017 to March 2018, over 1,000 intensive cares were provided at eight beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Our Intensivists are also responsible for resuscitation services and advice about the management of critically-ill patients within the hospital.
Our team and what we do
The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH) is comprised of 13 staff anesthetists including five certificated anesthetists. We provide perioperative care to all patients who require general anesthesia and spinal analgesia. From January 2017 to March 2018, our operating section performed approximately 6,200 anesthetics including general anesthesia with/without epidural anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, monitored anesthetic care (Table 1). In addition, many patients are seen by the perioperative management center including the Anesthesia Consult Clinic.
Also, our ICU is certificated by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine. It is managed as a closed-system, supported by some of our staff including two certificated intensivists. Approximately 1,100 intensive cares were provided at eight beds (Table 2). Patients treated at the ICU are mainly post-surgical indications. However, some of them were medical emergency cases.
Some members of our department are actively involved in research at clinical levels and supervise post doctorate, doctorate, postgraduate and undergraduate students.
Research activities
One of our members is conducting the research about pain in collaboration with the Division of Cancer Pathophysiology of the National Cancr Center Research Institute (NCCRI).
To understand the incidence and risk factors of severe adverse events in post-operative patients, epidemiological analysis was performed. To improve current care for perioperative patients, prospective studies are being conducted.
