Introduction
The Department of Nursing bears responsibility for team healthcare at the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH), the core institution for national cancer treatment and control in Japan. The responsibility of our department is to develop and improve the quality of cancer nursing as well as to contribute to the appropriate management of the hospital. Our department is also expected to foster nursing staff to achieve the best cancer nursing.
Our team and what we do
In 2017, we worked on provision of safe and high-quality nursing, human resource development with high skill and participation in health hospital management.
We have revised the philosophy and educational policy of the Department of Nursing and built a career support system for human resource development to provide high quality nursing. The new philosophy of our department is "As a member of the organization that leads cancer cure and care in Japan, we strive to develop cancer nursing with social needs in mind". In addition, head nurses indicated leadership. Then, we have worked on appropriate personnel allocation, reliable calculation of medical treatment fee and proper and effective bed control.
Research activities
We presented 52 studies on nursing at several annual conferences in 2017. That is 13 more than last year. The number of practical reports on work of nurses and visualization of work improvement at each department is increasing.
In addition, we wrote eight journal articles and 52 books. It is greatly exceeded the number last year and we took a result of clinical practice.
Education
Some nurses became Certified Nurse Specialists and Certified Nurses, three Nurse Specialists in Cancer Nursing, one Certified Nurse in Cancer Chemotherapy Nursing, one Palliative Care and one Infection Control.
The total number of certified nurse specialists is 16 in five fields and certified nurses are 38 in nine fields, they are active as leaders in clinical practice (Table 1).
Also, some nurses have learned Doctoral course, Master course at nursing universities and administrator training, etc., who lead to improvement of nursing quality and career improvement (Table 2).
Future prospects
We need to prepare for revision of medical fee and nursing care fee to secure human resources with the aim of promoting team medical care, medical cooperation, regional collaboration, and human resource development as a role of an acute cancer center hospital. We are aiming to respond to various needs of cancer patients and their families, build a support system by interdisciplinary teams as well as nurses and spread information to across Japan.
Recognizing the role and commitment in our hospital, we would like to improve nursing research and lead to the construction of evidence of cancer nursing, and aim for further development of nursing rare cancer, juvenile cancer, cancer survivorship, and clinical trials.
