Annual Report 2017

Division of Cohort Consortium Research

Manami Inoue, Maiko Fujimori, Shiori Tanaka, Yoko Hirose, Ryuhei Osanai

Introduction

The Division of Cohort Consortium Research aims to create evidence for the prevention of cancer and other diseases and extending the healthy life expectancy of Japanese. It does this by conducting epidemiological research using a domestic/regional/international epidemiological research network.

Research activities

1. The Collaborative Epidemiological Research Network Project of the Six National Centers for Advanced and Specialized Medical Care (6NC Project)

The 6NC Project is a core research project of the Division of Cohort Consortium Research. The main aim of the 6NC Project is to establish the 6NC Epidemiological Research Collaboration Platform, which will be used to conduct pooled analyses and mutual data analysis by exchange and cooperation among researchers at the six national centers. As part of this project we have established an analysis platform which offers both onsite and remote access with information security protection. We have also launched an initiative working group to make recommendations to extend the healthy life expectancy of Japanese, and for comprehensive disease prevention. This project started in 2017.

2. Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC)

The ACC is a collaborative effort which seeks to understand the relationship between genetics, environmental exposure, and the etiology of disease through establishment of a consortium of cohort studies with healthy individuals throughout Asian countries. The ACC includes 31 cohort studies in 10 countries in Asia involving 1.5 million participants, and more than 150 researchers across Asia, US, and the world. The main missions of the ACC are: 1) to serve as a platform for cross-cohort collaborative projects and combined analysis and 2) to act as an incubator for new cohort studies in Asia. Our division serves as a coordinating center and data center of the ACC, and directs many of its ongoing projects.

3. A large-scale epidemiological study to evaluate the effectiveness of eradicating Helicobacter pylori in preventing gastric cancer in the middle-aged and elderly Japanese population

This study aims to assess whether H.pylori eradication prevents the subsequent development of gastric cancer by establishing a pooled cohort of four large-scale epidemiological studies with information on H.pylori infection status (JPHC-NEXT in the Yokote, Saku, and Chikusei areas; the Yamagata Cohort; and the Tokyo Gastric Cancer Screening Study) targeting the middle-aged to elderly population. This project started in 2017.

4. Attributable Causes of Cancer (JAPAN PAF PROJECT)

To contribute to evidence-based policy decision making for national cancer control, we are conducting a systematic assessment to estimate the current burden of cancer attributable to known preventable risk factors in Japan. The first estimation was conducted for cancer incidence and mortality in the year 2005. The estimation is currently being updated for the year 2015.

Education

We have supervised the research of master and PhD students of The University of Tokyo. In addition, we have hosted a visiting scholar from Seoul National University, Korea.

Future prospects

As well as creating scientific evidence, we will expand and strengthen research collaboration networks, both domestic and international.
