Introduction
The Department of Nursing bears responsibility for team healthcare at the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH), the core institution for national cancer treatment and control in Japan. The responsibility of our department is to develop and improve the quality of cancer nursing as well as to contribute to the appropriate management of the hospital. Our department is also expected to foster nursing staff to achieve the best cancer nursing.
The Team and What We Do
In 2018, we worked on continuous provision of safe and high-quality nursing human resource development with high-level skill and participation in health hospital management. Head nurses focused on leadership and worked on more effective bed control and specialist research based on their specialties, while organizing support systems.
Research activities
We presented 40 study projects on nursing at several annual conferences in 2018. The number of practical reports on the work of nurses, visualization of work improvement at each department and high level of expertise in stoma rehabilitation and reproductive medicine increased.
In addition, we wrote 14 journal articles and books. These are reflected in nursing practice.
Education
Some nurses become Certified Nurses; there is one Certified Nurse in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing, one in Infection Control, one in Cancer Chemotherapy Nursing and two in Radiation Therapy Nursing.
The total number of certified nurse specialists is 16 in four fields and certified nurses number 39 in nine fields, and they are active as leaders in clinical practice. (Table 1)
Also, some nurses have taken master 's courses at nursing universities, and administrator training, etc., and lead career improvement. (Table 2)

Future prospects
We need to provide high-quality cancer nursing, to secure human resources with the aim of promoting team medical care, medical cooperation, regional collaboration, and human resource development as a role of a leading cancer center hospital.
We are aiming to respond to various needs of cancer patients and their families, build a support system with interdisciplinary teams and nurses to build the evidence of cancer nursing.
The basic concept is 'Infer, make a decision and command to provide nursing with consideration.'
We built a system to visualize decision making and we are aiming to improve nursing organization by sharing 'awareness'.
