Introduction
The Division of Cancer Statistics Integration, newly established in FY2017, develops and analyzes comprehensive cancer statistics information including cancer registry data in order to contribute to the development and evaluation of evidence-based cancer control.
The Team and What We Do
1. Analysis of cancer statistics information
Cancer statistics, including cancer registry data, needs to be scientifically analyzed to serve as a correct, useful, and interpretable source of information. The Division of Cancer Statistics Integration is responsible for analyzing and developing cancer statistics information including cancer registry data to address a variety of needs of public health, clinical, and basic sciences. The cancer statistics we provide are widely used by researchers, policy makers, mass media, health-care providers, patients, and citizens.
2. Integration of cancer statistics to develop and evaluate evidence-based cancer control policies
Cancer control policies need to be developed and evaluated based on scientific evidence. For this purpose, the Division of Cancer Statistics Integration combines cancer statistics information with a variety of information regarding prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and health economics, and mathematically analyzes the effects of cancer control policies.
Research activities
1. Cancer statistics website in the "Cancer Information Service"
Cancer statistics data and graphical information such as cancer incidence, mortality, and survival are provided on the website in the “Cancer Information Service”, managed by the Center for Cancer Control and Information Services. Our analysis using cancer statistics information is published as a scientific publication in the Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology (JJCO) and other academic journals. For the general public, the booklet "Cancer Statistics" is also annually published. This fiscal year, we provided cancer mortality data for 2018 and cancer incidence data for 2015, and published the booklet "Cancer statistics in Japan ‘19".
2. Research on cancer statistics and cancer control
Cancer statistics information is analyzed and combined with information on cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and health economics in order to develop and evaluate cancer control policies. This fiscal year, the prevalence of cancer with diabetes in Japan was estimated by combining population-based cancer registry data and the data of diabetes prevalence and risk of cancer.
3. Others
Our research activities also cover a variety of analysis on cancer and lifestyle-related disease prevention, early detection, treatment, etc. In this fiscal year, we conducted studies on the association between adolescent underweightness and adult onset diabetes, the association between weight control and gestational diabetes, and the effect of cancer education on children’s knowledge and perception of cancer.
Education
A master’s degree student successfully finished her degree in our division under the framework of a joint graduate school in the field of Cancer Statistics and Informatics in collaboration with Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine.
Future prospects
Based on the development and analysis of cancer statistics information, we aim to realize effective and efficient cancer control measures through the cancer control continuum from prevention to treatment and palliative care.
