Introduction
The Department of Nursing bears responsibility for team healthcare at the National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH), the core institution for national cancer treatment and control in Japan. “All Activities for Cancer Patients.” The responsibility of our department is to develop and improve the quality of cancer nursing as well as to contribute to the appropriate management of the hospital. Our department is also expected to foster nursing staff to achieve the best cancer nursing.
The Team and What We Do
We worked on the provision of safe and high-quality nursing. We assigned a lot of specialist outpatient units and improved management for patients.
We have an assistant director of the Department of Nursing who is specialized in research, and we arrange full-time research nurse. We clarify the support system for research.
Research activities
We presented 43 study projects on nursing at several annual conferences in 2019. There were a number of practical reports on the work of nurses, and the specialty of cancer nursing, such as ACP and relationships with the AYA generation.
In addition, we wrote 27 journal articles and books. These are reflected in nursing practice.
Education
One nurse completed the course for Specific Behavior and obtained the license for Cancer Pharmacotherapy.
The total number of certified nurse specialists is 15 in four fields and our certified nurses number 43 in nine fields, and they are active as leaders in clinical practice. (Table 1)
Also, some nurses have taken master’s courses at nursing universities and administrator training, etc., and lead career improvement. (Table 2)

Future prospects
We need to provide high-quality cancer nursing, to secure human resources with the aim of promoting team medical care, medical cooperation, regional collaboration, and human resource development as a role of a leading cancer center hospital.
We are aiming to respond to various needs of cancer patients and their families, build a support system with interdisciplinary teams and nurses to promote prospective studies to build the evidence for cancer nursing.
The basic concept is ‘Infer, make a decision and instruct to provide nursing with consideration.’
We built a system to visualize decision making and we are aiming to improve nursing organization by sharing ‘awareness’.
