Introduction
Remarkable progress has been made on not only endoscopic diagnosis but also endoscopic treatment. Our efforts will be focused on the development of new endoscopic diagnoses (e.g., molecular imaging and functional imaging) and treatments (e.g., full-thickness resection), as well as an effective training system with industry-academia collaboration (Figure 1).
The Team and What We Do
Since fiscal year 2017, in the Division of Science and Technology for Endoscopy of the Exploratory Oncology Research & Clinical Trial Center (EPOC) at the National Cancer Center (NCC) Tsukiji Campus, four teams have been organized (Diagnosis team, Treatment team, Training team, and AI team) to develop innovative endoscopic diagnoses, treatments and training systems. We have researched clinical needs and set up development themes for each team.
Diagnosis team: Taku Sakamoto, Haruhisa Suzuki, Satoru Nonaka, Masayoshi Yamada
Treatment team: Satoru Nonaka, Taku Sakamoto, Seiichiro Abe, Hiroyuki Takamaru
Training team: Haruhisa Suzuki, Yasuo Kakugawa, Shigetaka Yoshinaga, Taku Sakamoto, Keiko Nakamura
Artificial intelligence (AI) team: Masayoshi Yamada, Ichiro Oda
Supervisors: Ichiro Oda, Yutaka Saito
Research activities
1. In collaboration with Olympus Corporation, we have started the development of new endoscopic diagnostic, therapeutic and training equipment at Olympus Lab in the National Cancer Center Research Institute (NCCRI). In fiscal year 2019, we continued to develop innovative endoscopic equipment. Although details are currently confidential, each team is involved in three or four research and development themes, and have published some of the developments in 2020. The following presentations were done.
1. Sakamoto T, et al. The 99th Annual Meeting of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, September 2020, Kyoto, Japan
2. M. Ego, et al. The 111th Annual Meeting of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society Kanto Chapter, December 2020, Tokyo, Japan
We also received support from the National Cancer Center Research and Development Fund (31-S-5). We conducted porcine experiments and obtained basic data for future First in Human studies.
2. In collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence Research Center (AIRC), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) (Professor Jun Sese), the NCCRI (Professor Ryuji Hamamoto), and the Division of Science and Technology for Endoscopy of the EPOC (Kashiwa campus: Professor Hiroaki Ikematsu), we have started the research and development of an endoscopic diagnosis support system on tumor invasion of gastrointestinal cancer using AI. Preliminary results were presented for the following conference:
