Takayuki Yoshino, Hideaki Bando, Toshihiro Misumi, Masashi Wakabayashi, Yuriko Takeda, Motoko Suzuki, Isako Oda

Introduction

The Department of Data Science was newly established in April 2021. In recent years, with the advancement of ICT technology, efficient clinical cancer research is expected to be conducted by utilizing real data and big data. Data scientists can not only analyze individual patient data (IPD) but also create new value by utilizing data and draw conclusions that can be applied to cancer treatment. The department aims to efficiently solve various issues in cancer treatment through collaboration between them and physicians and other medical experts.

Research activities

In the ARCAD Asia project launched in September 2021, the Department of Data Science is promoting a data sharing project as the third data center following the ARCAD Foundation in France and the Mayo Clinic in the U.S., to collect and integrate IPD from past clinical trials on metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) conducted in Asia, and to utilize the data for drug R&D and other purposes. ARCAD Asia will build an integrated database in cooperation with pharmaceutical companies and clinical research groups in academia. Based on the results of utilizing the integrated database, suggestions about endpoints in clinical trials and the regulatory science process will be made to lead to cost reductions and efficiency improvements in drug R&D, and ultimately maximize the benefits to patients. In addition, the foundation of this project is being prepared for integration with databases in Europe and the U.S. ARCAD Asia will share its clinical trial database of 6 trials and 974 IPD with the Mayo Clinic, which will be integrated with the Mayo Clinic's database of 50 trials and 42,095 IPD in Europe and the U.S. A global database consisting of 56 studies and approximately 43,000 IPD will be constructed.

Education

A “Data Science Seminar” was held in December 2021 to promote the development of data scientists. In addition, an on-the-job training program is underway, in which master's-level data scientists from Yokohama City University and the University of Tokyo are accepted by Hospital East to gain experience in research using the ARCAD Asia database and in consistent operations ranging from database construction to analysis.

Future Prospects

In ARCAD Asia, the database will be expanded into a larger and more comprehensive database that includes other cancer types besides mCRC. In addition, we will promote the development of data scientists to utilize the constructed database.
