Introduction
Our main jobs are as follows:
- Maintain and inspect approximately 5,000 pieces of medical equipment in the hospital.
- Assist with the operation of medical equipment during surgery.
- Respond to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Plan the replacement of medical equipment.
The Team and What We Do
- 126 cases: trained hospital staff on the safe use of medical equipment.
- Rotated every week to change between responsibilities in 6 departments (operating rooms, ICU, central equipment control rooms, outpatients, Endoscopy Center and wards).
- On duty in the hospital to ensure the safe use of medical equipment by staff on call from Apr 2017.
Clinical support work in each department was as follows:
1) Operating rooms
- 286 cases: prepared the da Vinci system.
- 75 cases: operated neuromonitoring during surgery (SEP, MEP, etc.).
- 15 cases: assisted with radiofrequency ablation therapy.
- 2838 cases: conducted daily and periodic inspections of endoscopes, shadowless lights, operating tables, electric scalpels, anesthesia equipment, etc.
- 475 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Arranged the equipment to be used for the scheduled surgery.
2) ICU
- 3196 cases: conducted daily and periodic inspections of ventilators, blood purification equipment, external pacemakers, etc.
- 61 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Worked as a Respiratory Support Team (RST).
3) Central equipment control rooms
Infusion pumps, syringe pumps, etc.
- 29305 cases: handled loans. 28893 cases: handled returns.
- 23261 cases: conducted daily inspections and cleaning.
- 578 cases: conducted regular inspections.
- 339 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
4) Wards / outpatients / Endoscopy Center
- Managed the medical equipment installed in each department, such as biometric monitors, defibrillators, AEDs, electronic blood pressure monitors, and endoscopes.
- 2814 cases: conducted inspections.
- 170 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
Clinical support work was as follows
- 108 cases: peripheral blood stem cell collection.
- 1 case: bone marrow processing.
- 11 cases: lymphocyte collection.
- Shared information with the doctors in the weekly conferences.
Research activities
- Established a system in the department for holding meetings and training using online tools, and improved our work efficiency.
- Distributed training videos online to the entire hospital so that multiple specialists could view them.
Education
- Prepared an education plan for new employees.
- Made checklists for each department (including operating rooms, ICUs, central equipment control rooms and wards) and evaluated the results using scores.
- Focused on trainers’ training and gave tests in our job verification as well.
Future prospects
- Collaborate with other departments as a specialist in medical equipment for cancer care and perform appropriate medical equipment management.
- To ensure that medical equipment is used safely, plan and actively implement training for our staff who use it.
