Nozomu Kobayashi, Takahisa Matsuda, Masau Sekiguchi Special research assistants: Tomi Abe, Noriko Abeshima, Orie Kitamura, Mio Shimamura, Mika Mori

Introduction

The Division of Screening Technology works as a part of the Group for Prevention and Screening Research in the Institute for Cancer Control. The Division of Screening Technology consists of two staff medical doctors and five special research assistants.

The Team and What We Do

In the Division of Screening Technology, we aim to develop new diagnostic techniques that can be applied to cancer screening, as well as researching existing diagnostic methods that can be applied to medical examinations. We are also assessing a new close examination method in cancer screening. In addition, we also work on research aimed at risk stratification of people to be screened.

Research activities

 1) Examinations are ongoing for the cancer detection rate of each screening modality (e.g. chest CT, upper/lower GI endoscopy, MMG/tomosynthesis, breast ultrasonography, FDG-PET CT/MRI, and CT-colonography), the characteristics of the detected cancer, and the false positive rate for all individuals who underwent cancer screening from the establishment our center in 2004. In addition, we aim to clarify the relationship between cancer screening and cancer death from long-term (prognosis survey) results. Moreover, the following research is ongoing: 2) Field construction for verification of diagnostic tools for colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions using biomarkers (Oshima Study), 3) Japan Polyp Study: multicenter prospective cohort study to elucidate the preventive effect of colorectal cancer caused by polypectomy, 4) Study on establishment and effectiveness assessment of screening model using colonoscopy (Aomori Project), 5) Prospective multicenter study to evaluate the prevalence of sessile serrated lesions in Japan, 6) Prospective multicenter study to evaluate the relationship between the background of detection and clinicopathological features of colorectal cancer, 7) Study on the relationship between advanced colorectal neoplasia at initial colonoscopy and detected polyps at surveillance, 8) Study on the diagnostic performance of a risk stratification score calculated using baseline individual characteristics and its combination with FIT. In addition, the amino index (AICS) study has received plasma samples from 8,111 screening individuals, and comprehensive amino acid analysis has been completed. Now, the analysis data will be collated with clinical data.

Other research: We are collaborating with external researchers using 1,325 stool samples collected from the Oshima Study. (Research on colibactin-producing bacteria as fecal biomarkers, bacteria and bacterial flora as fecal biomarkers and their functions). In addition, 25 English articles were published, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and screening of colorectal cancer and gastric cancer.

Future Prospects

We will promote screening development research to gather evidence.
