Introduction
Our primary responsibilities include:
- Maintain and inspect approximately 5,500 pieces of medical equipment in the hospital.
- Assist with the operation of medical equipment during surgeries.
- Respond to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Plan the replacement of medical equipment.
The Team and What We Do
- 158 cases: trained hospital staff on the safe use of medical equipment.
- Staff are rotated weekly to cover various responsibilities in 7 departments (operating rooms, ICU, central equipment control rooms, outpatients, Endoscopy Center, IVR Center and wards).
- Have been on duty in the hospital to ensure the safe use of medical equipment by staff on call since April 2017.
Clinical support work in each department was as follows:
1) Operating rooms
- 420 cases: prepared the da Vinci system.
- 67 cases: operated neuromonitoring during surgery (SEP, MEP, etc.).
- 11 cases: assisted with radiofrequency ablation therapy.
- 3062 cases: conducted daily and periodic inspections of endoscopes, shadowless lights, operating tables, electric scalpels, anesthesia equipment, etc.
- 433 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Arranged the equipment to be used for scheduled surgeries.
2) ICU
- 3486 cases: conducted daily and periodic inspections of ventilators, blood purification equipment, external pacemakers, etc.
- 55 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
- Worked as a part of the Respiratory Support Team (RST).
3) Central equipment control rooms
Managed infusion pumps, syringe pumps, etc.
- 28279 cases: handled loans. 28327 cases: handled returns.
- 23363 cases: conducted daily inspections and cleaning.
- 628 cases: conducted regular inspections.
- 295 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
4) Wards / outpatients / Endoscopy Center
- Managed the medical equipment installed in each department, such as biometric monitors, defibrillators, AEDs, electronic blood pressure monitors, and endoscopes.
- 1777 cases: conducted inspections.
- 153 cases: responded to medical equipment malfunctions.
Clinical support work included:
- 95 cases: peripheral blood stem cell collection.
- 0 cases: bone marrow processing.
- 3 cases: lymphocyte collection.
- Shared information with the doctors in the weekly conferences.
Research Activities
- Established a system in the department for holding meetings and training using online tools, resulting in improved work efficiency.
- Distributed training videos online to the entire hospital so that multiple specialists could view them.
Education
- Prepared an education plan for new employees.
- Created checklists for each department (including operating rooms, ICUs, central equipment control rooms and wards) and evaluated the results using scores.
- Focused on training trainers and administered tests to verify their proficiency in our job.
Future Prospects
- We will collaborate with other departments as specialists in medical equipment for cancer care and perform appropriate medical equipment management.
- To ensure the safe use of medical equipment, we will plan and actively implement training program for our staff.
