Introduction
The Division of Prevention aims to evaluate factors contributing to cancer onset in the Japanese population using the latest evidence, while also conducting research to present the best cancer prevention policies for Japan.
The Team and What We Do
The Division of Prevention focuses on conducting research on lifestyle, chemoprevention, molecular markers to create cancer prevention methods such as risk prediction, risk stratification models, and evidence-based cancer prevention guidelines for Japanese people.
Research Activities
1. Evaluation of cancer prevention strategies in Japan and cancer prevention guidelines
To develop evidence-based cancer prevention strategies specific to the Japanese population, we conducted systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and pooled analyses of Japanese epidemiological studies on the association between modifiable and non-modifiable exposure factors and cancer. In addition, we reevaluated and updated several associations between cancer factors and cancer incidence and mortality.
2. Establishment of a large-scale cohort infrastructure in Asia (Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC))
The ACC is a collaborative effort, which aims to understand the relationship between factors such as genetics, environmental exposure, and disease etiology through utilizing a consortium of Asian cohort studies. Our division serves as the coordinating center and data center for this large-scale consortium of healthy Asian individuals.
3. Establishment of Asian version of cancer prevention guidelines (Asian Codes Against Cancer (ACAC))
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) launched the World Code Against Cancer Framework and is now promoting regional specific cancer guidelines. Following this framework, the Division of Prevention and Division of International Health Policy Research have been leading the development of cancer prevention guidelines specific for Asian nations, in collaboration with the IARC and the Asian National Cancer Center Alliance (ANCCA).
4. The effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication in gastric cancer prevention
This project, which started in 2017, aims to assess whether H. pylori eradication prevents the subsequent development of gastric cancer by conducting pooled analysis of large-scale epidemiological studies that have information on H. pylori infection status.
5. Attributable causes of cancer (JAPAN PAF PROJECT)
We conducted a systematic assessment to estimate the current burden of cancer attributable to known preventable and non-modifiable risk factors in Japan. The estimation is currently being updated for the year 2015.
6. Participating in National Center collaborative projects
The collaborative epidemiological research network project of the six national centers in Japan (6NCs) for advanced and specialized medicine - National Center Cohort Collaborative for Advancing Population Health aims to collect and coordinate resources of the six national medical centers while taking advantage of each of the center’s expertise, to enhance Japan’s research capabilities. We are leading projects that utilize existing cohort and lifelog data such as prediction of preemptive medical care in Japan, and coronavirus antibody surveys among 6NC staff.
Education
We supervised domestic and international master’s and doctoral students. We serve as Coordinate Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, and accept graduate students. In addition, we accepted researchers and trainees from overseas.
Future Prospects
We will continue to develop and evaluate effective cancer prevention guidelines and promote research that will further enhance the implementation of cancer prevention strategies in Japan.
