Annual Report 2023

Department of Cardiology

Kazuko Tajiri

Introduction

In the Department of Cardiology, we provide comprehensive cardiovascular management for cancer patients. This includes assessing cardiovascular risks before surgery or cancer drug therapy, optimizing cardiovascular conditions, monitoring for early detection and intervention of cardiovascular toxicity during cancer drug therapy, long-term monitoring following cancer drug therapy, and treating cardiovascular diseases that develop during cancer treatment.

The Team and What We Do

In 2023, we managed 2,333 consultations for new patients and 512 for follow-up patients, resulting in a total of 2,845 patient consultations. For cases requiring emergency interventions, such as catheter treatments or advanced intensive care, patients are promptly transferred to nearby specialized cardiovascular hospitals, ensuring close collaboration for optimal treatment.

Research Activities

Several clinical studies and translational research projects are conducted on various cardiovascular issues faced by patients with cancer, including immune checkpoint inhibitor-related myocarditis, cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction, and venous thrombosis. These studies focus on elucidating pathophysiology, conducting real-world investigations, and exploring early detection and treatment strategies. In 2023, eight English-language papers, six Japanese-language papers, and three authored books were published.

Education

Education related to cardio-oncology was conducted through regular meetings with oncologists, physiological testing technicians, nurses, and pharmacists.

Future Prospects

Maximizing the effectiveness of cancer treatment requires pre-treatment evaluation of the cardiovascular system, ongoing monitoring after treatment initiation, and appropriate treatment for cardiovascular toxicity when it occurs. This necessitates a deep understanding of cancer treatments and enhanced cardiovascular management tailored to them. Additionally, it is crucial to train experts in cardiovascular oncology and to equip general cardiologists with the necessary skills for cardiovascular oncology practice.
