Department of Cancer Model Development

Introduction
In the field of both basic and clinical cancer research, growing interest is attracted not only to target cancer cells themselves but also to their immune mechanisms and microenvironments as part of the whole organism system. Experiments using laboratory animals, particularly genetically modified mice, are essential for these studies, and efficient breeding and management of these animals with consideration for animal welfare is highly required. In the Department of Cancer Model Development, we have focused on supporting activities related to the animal experimentation facility, including (1) mouse embryo engineering, (2) animal tissue analysis, and (3) the production of cancer organoids/cell lines.
Research Activities
In mouse embryo engineering, we have set up the necessary technologies for the regulation and preservation of genetically modified mice, including in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation of embryos to insource these processes in the NCC. Regarding animal tissue analysis, we provide flexible support based on researchers' requests, covering everything from tissue embedding to sectioning and staining. We received 441 requests from within the NCC and sliced 10,371 sections from 3,808 embedding blocks this year. For cell line and organoid production, we have provided established cell lines in response to requests from researchers both within and outside the NCC.
Education
As part of our collaborative research activities, we accepted one undergraduate student and provided guidance in organoid culture and presentation skills.
Future Prospects
In cooperation with the FIOC and the Central Animal Division, we strive to build a support system related to animal experiments by incorporating not only existing assistance but also new technology development in response to the needs of individual researchers and societal demands.
