Annual Report 2023

Division of Biostatistical Research

Taro Shibata, Aya Kuchiba

Introduction

Our division aims to gain a better understanding of specific research questions and derive deeper insights from collaborative research through the involvement of both applied research and methodology development in cooperation with various divisions of the National Cancer Center. In addition, as experts in quantitative research methods, we provide consultations on research hypothesis formulation, study design, data collection and management, database design, and data analysis, thereby enhancing the research infrastructure. We work closely with the Biostatistics Division of the Center for Research Administration and Support on these activities.

Research Activities

Methodological Research

  • A paper on statistical methods for evaluating etiologic heterogeneity among cancer subtypes has been submitted and is currently under revision.
  • A paper on statistical methods for detecting changes in longitudinal biomarker data from liquid biopsy has been submitted.

Building and Utilizing Research Platform

  • Conducted two consultations on research utilizing omics data in collaboration with bioinformatic experts in the Division of Bioinformatics, Research Institute.
  • Explored methods to utilize clinical trial databases coordinating with other cancer-related information dissemination platforms and research initiatives and continued collaborating with the Division of Cancer Information Service to ensure ongoing information dissemination.

Collaborative Research

  • A paper applying causal mediation analysis to nested case-control data has been accepted.
  • Participating in an intervention study related to smoking cessation from the planning and presenting primary results at ASCO as a co-author.
  • Involved in multiple studies evaluating the performance and building evidence for the implementation of endoscopic diagnostic support systems and ultrasound diagnostic support systems using artificial intelligence, starting from the development of the research protocols.
  • Continuing to provide advice on research design and analytical strategies for multiple studies, including epidemiological research using biomarkers, studies on smoking cessation, and national survey study on health information.

Education

  • Planned and conducted two internships for junior biostatisticians in collaboration with the Division of Behavioral Sciences and the Division of Epidemiology, focusing on public health research. Starting this year, these internships have been officially incorporated into the AMED Biostatistician Training Promotion Program.
  • Invited a biostatistician from Johns Hopkins University to host a seminar on risk prediction models using genomic information.

Future Prospects

In 2023, in addition to methodological research and collaborative projects, we continued to conduct joint consultations with bioinformatics experts and organized internships for graduate students studying biostatistics. We also worked to strengthen collaboration within the Institute for Cancer Control and with external research institutes.

Biostatistics has a wide range of applications. We aim to actively engage in research conducted at the Institute for Cancer Control, identifying new collaboration forms and addressing emerging challenges.
