Introduction

The Center for Cancer Registries maintains accurate and useful cancer statistics, providing a foundation for cancer countermeasures, research, and improvements in medical quality based on scientific evidence.

The Team and What We Do

We were commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to collect, examine, organize and compile data from prefectures based on the Cancer Registration Promotion Act. We compiled cancer statistics by connecting the 47 prefectures and the National Cancer Center online via a cloud environment, collating and consolidating data entered by prefectural cancer registration offices, and collating death information provided by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. We operated a contact point for the provision of anonymized information from the National Cancer Registry and anonymized information from the National Aggregate In-hospital Cancer Registry for research purposes.

We operated and maintained a prefectural database system for the integrated use of data from cases diagnosed in 2015 and cases diagnosed in 2016 and beyond. We maintained the common notification system for cancer registries (GTOL/GTS) and the system for requesting the use of information from the National Cancer Registry. We updated the standard software for hospital cancer registration, Hos-CanR next, and the linked Canstage. We also developed a "recommendation system" that extracts treatment information from DPC data.

We outsourced the external audit of prefectural cancer registration offices to an external organization, based on the manual for safety management measures to protect personal information in the National Cancer Registry.

Research Activities

The National Cancer Registry is currently working on compiling data for cases diagnosed in 2020. As a nationwide compilation of in-hospital cancer registries, including cancer treatment collaboration base hospitals, we compiled and published data for cases diagnosed in 2022. We reported on the 2018-2019 pediatric AYA compilation and the 10-year survival rate compilation for in-hospital cancer registry 2011. In the survival rate calculations, we continued to provide support for prognosis surveys in response to inquiries from municipal governments to each cancer treatment collaboration base hospital regarding resident registration.

Education

We provided education and awareness of the points to note in cancer registration practice and recent rule changes. We held training (beginner and intermediate) for prefectural practitioners and administrative staff online and via e-learning. For practitioners working in hospitals, etc., we conducted beginner and intermediate level certification training, and intermediate level practitioner training via e-learning. In addition, we conducted examinations for beginner and intermediate level certification for practitioners working in hospitals, etc., as well as renewal examinations for those who had already been certified. We also held training sessions for data collection and analysis.

Future Prospects

In order to ensure the stable operation of cancer registration based on the Cancer Registration Promotion Act, it is necessary to promote the standardization of cancer registration at hospitals and other institutions, and to establish organizations for compiling and publishing cancer statistics. In terms of promoting the utilization of data, it is necessary to simplify procedures while prioritizing the safety of data management.
