Research Activities
Since the establishment of the Collaboration Support Office under the hospital director at the National Cancer Center Hospital East in February 2018, the total number of agreements for Collaborative Research, etc. (new and amended) has increased from 193 in FY2017 (115 for Collaborative Research) to 675 in FY2024 (345 for Collaborative Research). This represents an approximately 3.5-fold increase overall and a 3-fold increase for Collaborative Research (Figure 1).
From FY2021, approvals for Collaborative Research, etc. have been managed by each campus, with the Tsukiji Campus serving as the Industry–Academia Collaboration and Intellectual Property Strategy Office. At the Kashiwa Campus, the number of approvals rose from 434 in FY2021 to 612 in FY2022, 694 in FY2023, and 755 in FY2024, showing about a 1.7-fold increase over four years.
For Collaborative Research with companies (including investigator-initiated clinical trials [IITs]) that generated payments, both the number of active projects and the amount of research funding have expanded steadily. These increased from 59 projects and 312 million yen in FY2014 to 317 projects and 3.359 billion yen in FY2024, representing approximately 5.4-fold and 10.8-fold growth, respectively (Figure 2).
Patent applications have remained stable. There were 33 in FY2024 (9 new applications, 17 priority claims, and 7 divisional applications), 43 in FY2023 (22 new, 11 priority, and 10 divisional), and 34 in FY2022 (18 new, 9 priority, and 7 divisional). Priority claims and divisional applications are counted as a single case, even when multiple filings are made.
