Research Activities
Support was provided for approximately 50 clinical studies. As part of large-scale, multicenter collaborative research efforts, 361 cases were enrolled in MONSTAR-SCREEN-3, 715 in LC-SCRUM-Asia, 557 in the SCRUM Disease Registry, 5,529 in GOZILA, and 466 in the CONDUCTOR study. A total of 23 papers were published in leading journals such as “Nature Medicine”, and 45 presentations were delivered at academic conferences. As part of international expansion, LC-SCRUM Asia Pacific (LC-SCRUM AP) was established, with case enrollment from Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia beginning in October 2022, leading to a wide range of collaborative research with international investigators. In ARCAD Asia, individual participant data from 16 trials involving 4,894 cases were integrated, and merged with the ARCAD database operated by the ARCAD Foundation in France and Mayo Clinic in the United States. This resulted in a comprehensive dataset encompassing 67 trials and 47,076 cases.
Education
By the end of FY2024, a total of 11 staff members obtained certification as Genome Medical Research Coordinators, 1 earned SoCRA CCRP certification, 1 acquired Certified CRC status, 5 obtained the GCP Passport, 1 earned the IT Passport, and 2 passed the Level 2 Statistical Certification Exam. In FY2024, the number of staff members with GCP Passport certification increased by two. To promote retention, efforts such as encouraging membership in academic societies and the acquisition of professional qualifications were implemented, along with the conversion of part-time positions to full-time employment to support long-term career development.
Future Prospects
1. In FY2024, discussions began regarding research collaboration with government and medical institutions in Indonesia as a new participating country in LC-SCRUM-AP. In the existing participating countries—Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia—ongoing studies were continued and efforts were made to expand participating sites. As a result, the initiative has now expanded to five countries and 15 institutions, including Indonesia. In FY2025, discussions are planned to begin with the Philippines as a new potential participant, where nine institutions are expected to consider joining, and negotiations are anticipated to be initiated.
2. MONSTAR-SCREEN-3, a multi-omics-based study incorporating DNA/RNA analysis of tissue and blood, as well as spatial transcriptomics, was launched in FY2024 and has been successfully enrolling cases.
3. The second phase of ARCAD Asia was launched in FY2024, with the expansion of its database to include not only colorectal cancer but also gastric cancer, under the new initiative ARCAD-Gastric, which is now fully operational.
4. Since FY2023, a joint research project has been underway with the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization aimed at developing assays for MRD (Molecular Residual Disease) and MCED (Multi-Cancer Early Detection). The project is titled “Clinical Development of Molecular Residual Disease (MRD) and Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) using Liquid Biopsy Multiomics Based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
